While a 61–year–old woman is now having bouts of severe depression after she lost her husband and daughter and six grandchildren who are all missing until now.
These are just some of the cases documented by Balsa Mindanao's volunteers who conducted psycho–social therapy sessions among adult and children survivors in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan last January 14–15. In a statement, NDRRMC said Tropical Storm Sendong entered the Philippines last Dec. 15; exited the country last Dec. 18; and the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan were badly affected.
"While it is true that the strength of TS (Tropical Storm) Sendong was on 65 kph, its estimated amount of rainfall (10–20 mm per hour) was heavy and was within the 400 km diameter which caused heavy rainfall in Mindanao areas particularly Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City," NDRRMC said in a statement.
But was the Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City disaster really caused by heavy rainfall? Or was it caused by the sea of logs cut legally and illegally in the mountains nearby these cities?
