The recently concluded barangay election
By Yvonne Elim
SAN PABLO, ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR—Exchanges of unkind words, family quarrel, deceiving the people, the use of elected officials with higher positions, these were the scenes that were observed during the last barangay elections.
Based on my observation here in barangay Marcos Village, San Pablo town, Zamboanga del Sur, there was no reliable process in the recently concluded barangay election.
The people who ran for the position of barangay chairman and members of the barangay council had no high regard with each other as each threw unkind words to those who ran under the banner of another political party.
As observed, families quarreled just because of the recently concluded barangay election.
In an interview with Dionesio Rosales, a resident of Marcos Village, he said the recently concluded barangay election was unfair because different kinds of cheating were employed just to win.
Mr. Rosales added that there were those who ran for the position of barangay chairman and members of the barangay council using the elected officials with higher positions just to win.
Edgar Timba, another resident of Marcos Village who is also a fisherman, said that his experiences when it comes to elections were all but unpleasant. He said most of those who win the elections do not fulfill their promises uttered during the election campaigns; and others abuse their positions as elected government officials.
Last October 29, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) held the synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in about 41,000 barangays in the entire Philippines.
